I always had to wait because I was the fifth child out of five. I was the last kid, a female, and I was reared by a farmer for a mother and a meager farmer for a father. At the age of ten, I sold pepper on the streets of Ibadan to support my mother. enrolled in Ibadan public primary and secondary schools. went to OOU and majored in physics. I was able to continue on to Finland for a Masters in Biomedical Engineering because I had a 2.1. I worked as a cleaner on the side while earning my master’s degree and continued to do so afterward.
I went to over 100 universities for my PhD out of desperation, and I eventually received a full 3 year scholarship (later extended to 4 years scholarship) at @usask, Canada to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. I worked part-time as a makeup artist, teaching assistant, hair braider, and weave fixer while enrolled in that PhD program to supplement my income. Lady Who Hawked Pepper Bags PhD
As the first black person to receive a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, I crossed the stage today! I walked this platform for Nigeria, my motherland, and you, Mama Africa! For all of you humiliated and despised black women, I walked the stage! Lady Who Hawked Pepper Bags PhD
I walked from my Ibadan impoverished neighborhood, “Mokola,” for all of you. I walked in support of all current and former OSU students who have received that criticism from those who believe we lack intelligence! I marched through Finland on your behalf, wondering what comes next for all of you Africans!
In particular, I walked in pursuit of your ambitions for your parents, siblings, and extended family! I particularly walked the stage in honor of my late mentor Ayodele Olatunbosun and my late sister Omoleye Olubamiji. I walked today in honor of my future husband and my unborn children who have been waiting patiently for me to achieve my goals so that he can have a wife he can be proud of and they can have a role model to look up to. I walked in support of all immigrants and all young people who pursue their ambitions every day. Lady Who Hawked Pepper Bags PhD
I was celebrating Jesus Christ, my one and only real love, and his unwavering love as I walked (in you I walk in you I live and in you I have had and will continue to have my being). Be courageous, inventive, unique, and all else you want to be, but always remember to put God first! Never let a guy, your upbringing, your financial situation, your color, your past transgressions, your employer, your spouse, your background, or anything else convince you that you can’t. Go shrewd! Go all out! Go for the gold! Stick to God! Simply begin!
And in fact, my life has changed in five years. This article gave me a platform in Canada to become a courageous STEM leader, introduced me to many incredible people who have since become close friends and family, helped start the STEMHub Foundation, took me into your homes, and given me visibility to Nigerian leaders. Let’s recall my illustrious article together. I’LL BE WALKIN’ FOR YOU FOREVER! I will always defend you! And forever demonstrating to the world what being Black Girl Magic means Lady Who Hawked Pepper Bags PhD
