On May 25, 1997, during a match against Albert Costa, he hit a serve with a personal-best speed of 229.0 km/h (142.3 mph). When his professional career was at its height, Philippoussis had one of the fastest serves in the game. Mark Philippoussis Parents

On March 29, 1999, Philippoussis entered the top 10 for the first time. He stayed there for ten weeks. In 1999, he reached Wimbledon’s quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. He won the first set against Pete Sampras and then retired in the second. Mark Philippoussis Parents

Although early in his career, conflicts with John Newcombe and Tony Roche kept him from being fully devoted, Philippoussis has repeatedly stated that he is proud to represent his country in Davis Cup play.

Injury concerns prevented Philippoussis from competing in the Davis Cup and caused teammates Patrick Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt to publicly argue. Rafter publicly accused Philippoussis of swaying the squad after he withdrew from a Davis Cup match in late 2000.

Philippoussis underwent three knee surgery before beginning a protracted comeback. He started surfing as a new passion, engaged a new physical trainer, and made himself readily accessible for Davis Cup.

In a match against Andre Agassi at Wimbledon in 2003 (6-3, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4), he broke the previous Australian tennis record with 46 aces served, falling three aces short of Richard Krajicek’s then-current ATP Tour record. Mark Philippoussis Parents

In 2003, Philippoussis ended a two-year singles title drought by winning the Shanghai Open. On November 30, 2003, in Melbourne, he defeated Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero in the fourth set of the Davis Cup final, giving Australia victory.

Due to a highly publicized relationship with Delta Goodrem that ended after it was revealed in the media that he was seeing Paris Hilton at the time, his reputation was seriously damaged in October 2004.

Philippoussis got greater recognition when he was once again given entrance to the 2006 Wimbledon after some controversy around his wildcard selection following a disappointing performance at the 2006 Australian Open. He was defeated in the next round.

Rafael Nadal overcame Philippoussis, a wildcard entrant and the No. 114 player at the time, in the first round of the 2006 US Open. The Australian Davis Cup team was shockingly defeated 5-0 by Argentina.

Philippoussis defeated Dmitry Tursunov, 6-4, 7-6, at the 2007 Hopman Cup. He overextended his knee in his second match against Jérôme Haehnel, which resulted in him having to forfeit.

Philippoussis obtained a protected ranking of No. 119 and was allowed to use that status to enter eight contests. Tennis Australia advised him that due to his lack of match play and refusal to take part in the Australian Open wildcard playoff, he would not be given any special treatment and would have to earn his wildcard.

Philippousis participated in a professional tour match for the first time since suffering a 4-6, 4-6 defeat to Michael Yani, the fifth seed, in the Challenger of Dallas first round in November 2006.

Philippoussis participated in World Team Tennis this summer for the Philadelphia Freedoms. The team chose 2002 Freedoms player Philippoussis with the first overall pick. Mark Philippoussis Parents
